Our recent guests traveled all the way from Italy for a vacation in Oklahoma and shared their impression on their trip with our Model S! Check out their travel blog (both in English and in the original Italian version that the guest sent us).
We are Italian tourists traveling to Oklahoma, a state located in the heart of the US, not well known to Italian tourists, and certainly off the beaten path of the most visited international tourist spots. However, Oklahoma offers many surprising attractions, both from a natural and historical point of view.
In search of new tourist destinations to discover, I looked online for the most scenic roads in Oklahoma and created a personal tour, which I decided to take last weekend.
To add to the novelty, in pursuit of excitement, I decided to rent an electric car, naturally a Tesla. Thanks to the super-efficient organization of Tesla Rental OKC, I was able to travel in a fantastic 2024 Tesla Model S, the top-of-the-line electric sedan, a true gem of technology combined with elegance and comfort, hardly rivaled even by the most demanding European car models.
The car was perfect, immaculate as if it had just come out of the factory, fully charged, and ready to go. The Tesla Rental OKC team provides you with all the instructions, utilities and equipment necessary for a safe and trouble-free journey, but the real thrill begins as soon as you step into the car.
Just press the brake pedal, and the car immediately starts serving you: the seat automatically moves toward the steering wheel (a yoke like that of airplanes!) and positions itself to offer the best driving comfort.
The large onboard computer display is your travel companion: once the route is set, the screen shows the map with all the necessary (and super important, since it's an electric car!) indications.
You have the distance in miles between the various planned stops, the locations where charging stations (Tesla SuperChargers) are available, and even the remaining range from stop to stop. It's impossible to run out of charge; just follow the directions!
In Italy, there are still many reservations about electric cars (especially Teslas), likely due to the limited coverage of charging stations compared to the widespread availability of fuel stations. For this reason, hybrid cars, which offer both combustion and electric engines (albeit mainly for city use), are still more popular in Italy.

We set off for our tour along I-40 to the first stop, Lake Eufaula State Park, east of Oklahoma City, located in McIntosh County, 14 miles southwest of Checotah. The artificial lake is the largest in Oklahoma, with a long and jagged design that resembles the Norwegian fjords.
We continue along US 69 towards McAlester, where our computer has scheduled a charging point.
This common misconception in Italy about the long charging times is debunked: in reality, a nearly full charge at Tesla Super Chargers takes about twenty minutes or less (depending on the charge level when you arrive), roughly the time we usually spend at a service station for a fill-up and a break at an Autogrill.
Some public charging stations may charge more slowly, but the wait is worth it, especially since many of them offer free charging, AND the onboard screen offers a variety of entertainment!
We set off for the next stop, Talimena National Scenic Byway, one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Oklahoma, within the Ouachita National Forest, which crosses the Winding Stair Mountains and the Ouachita Mountains. The scenic drive begins in Talihina along Oklahoma State Highway 1, ending in Mena, Arkansas.
The road is very beautiful, with several viewpoints along the way where you can admire breathtaking panoramas.
Photos are a must, so we activate the Autopilot function, available in the sophisticated Tesla Model S software. And here, the thrill is truly overwhelming: after the initial anxiety of completely entrusting the car with driving, you realize that the autopilot actually drives much better than you!
Thanks to the sophisticated system of cameras on the Tesla Model S, the car drives at cruising speed according to the indicated speed limits, stays perfectly centered in the lane, slows down when necessary or when approaching an obstacle, stops at red lights, and often automatically occupies the free lane on the right. However, the driver's attention can never wane; it's not allowed to get distracted or lose sight of the road, otherwise, the Autopilot function is automatically deactivated (which is definitely a great safety feature!).
Thanks to Autopilot, we effortlessly travel all 54 miles of the scenic road to Mena, where a new charge is necessary, which will take us to Ozark, AR, towards our final destination, Eureka Springs.
We covered 432 miles, and after about a dozen hours of travel, we arrive in the evening at this delightful town in Arkansas, where it feels like time has stopped at the end of the 19th century.
After many miles in nature, passing through small villages or, at most, a couple of larger centers like Ozark, we are struck by the numerous tourist facilities that the small town offers: motels, small hotels, bed & breakfasts, restaurants, many in Victorian-style buildings. We stay in a delightful 'cozy' bed & breakfast, Heartstone Inn & Cottages, a perfectly maintained late 19th-century building, enhanced by a lovely garden at the entrance, where we booked a mini-suite furnished in perfect period style, meticulously cared for and very comfortable, with a small gazebo on the porch in front of the room.
After a delicious breakfast of French toast, hashbrowns, sausages, and fresh fruit served at 9 AM sharp (!), we head out to explore the town, which, given its size, can be visited in a morning. There are two tourist tours available, which can be taken on two trolleys: one is a historical tour that takes place in the historic center, rich in authentically late 19th-century, early 20th-century buildings, perfectly preserved, with souvenir shops available for the many tourists who flock to the small town; the second tour takes you to the large and imposing statue of Christ of the Ozarks, located just outside the city.
After completing the visit and recharging, we set off for the next stop, War Eagle Mill, Rogers AR, in the War Eagle Valley, an ancient, historic mill located in the Ozarks. The access road is unpaved for about a mile, but it's no problem for our Model S. Just increase the suspension height, accessing the controls on the onboard computer, and you're all set!
(The computer is full of operational functions, from adjusting the cabin's temperature and ventilation, of course, adjustable to your liking, to controls for lights, wipers, etc.).
Not to mention the "media entertainment" system with all the streaming TV, radio apps, etc., available for entertainment, WOW!!
Next to the building with the mill, the restaurant, and the store selling typical local products, there's the historic bridge over the river, which can be crossed by car.
The tour comes to an end, and we return to OKC in less than four hours, once again leaving the driving to Autopilot, which performs its task admirably like a perfect humanoid robot!
Important: the cost for electric "fueling" for 706 miles? Surprise, $30! Not bad!...

Un’italiana in vacanza in Oklahoma, uno Stato situato nel cuore degli US, scarsamente noto ai turisti italiani, sicuramente fuori dai luoghi più visitati dal turismo internazionale. Oklahoma tuttavia riserva molte attrattive sorprendenti, sia dal punto di vista naturalistico, che storico.
Proprio alla ricerca di nuove mete turistiche da scoprire, ho cercato in rete le most scenic roads in Oklahoma ed ho costruito un tour personale, che poi ho deciso di percorrere lo scorso week end.
Per aggiungere novità alla novità, a caccia di emozioni, ho deciso di noleggiare un’auto elettrica, ovviamente Tesla. Grazie all’organizzazione super efficiente di Tesla Rental OKC, ho potuto viaggiare su una fantastica Tesla Model S 2024, la top di gamma delle berline elettriche, un vero gioiello di tecnologia unito ad eleganza e comfort, difficilmente eguagliabili, anche tra i più pretenziosi modelli delle vetture europee.
L’auto era perfetta, immacolata come appena uscita dalla fabbrica, carica al completo e pronta all’uso. Il team di Tesla Rental OKC ti fornisce tutte le indicazioni e le utility necessarie per il viaggio sicuro e senza problemi, ma la vera emozione inizia appena metti piede nell’auto.
Basta premere il pedale del freno e la macchina si mette subito al tuo servizio: il sedile avanza automaticamente verso il volante (a cloche come quello degli aerei!) e si auto posiziona in modo da offrire il miglior comfort di guida.
Il grande display del computer di bordo è il tuo compagno di viaggio: una volta impostato il percorso, nello schermo viene visualizzata la mappa con tutte le indicazioni necessarie (e super importanti, trattandosi di una vettura elettrica!).
Hai a disposizione la distanza in miglia tra le varie tappe impostate, i punti ove trovare i dispositivi per la ricarica (charging stations, Tesla Super Chargers) e addirittura l’autonomia residua tappa per tappa. Impossibile rimanere senza carica, basta solo seguire le indicazioni!
In Italia ci sono ancora molte resistenze verso l’auto elettrica (soprattutto verso Tesla), sicuramente a causa della scarsa copertura del territorio italiano di charging stations, in confronto alla capillarità delle stazioni di servizio carburanti. Per questo motivo, da noi è molto più popolare l’auto ibrida, che offre sia motore a combustione, che l’elettrico (sia pure per un uso più cittadino).
Partiamo per il nostro tour lungo I-40 fino alla prima tappa, Lake Eufala State Park, ad est di Oklahoma City situato nella contea di McIntoh, a 14 miglia a sud-ovest di Checotah. Il lago artificiale è il più grande nello stato dell'Oklahoma, con un disegno lungo e molto frastagliato che ricorda i fiordi norvegesi.
Proseguiamo lungo la US 69 verso McAlester, dove il nostro computer ci ha fissato il punto di ricarica.
Anche questo luogo comune in Italia dei tempi di ricarica molto lughi è da sfatare: in realtà la ricarica quasi completa ai tesla Super Charger dura all’incirca una ventina di minuti o meno (dipendentemente dal livello di carica con cui si arriva), quindi il tempo che normalmente impieghiamo alla stazione di servizio per un pieno ed una sosta in Autogrill.
Alcune charging stations pubbliche possono caricare più lentamente, ma vale comunque l’attesa, visto che molte di esse offrono la ricarica gratuita!
Si riparte per la prossima tappa, Talimena National Scenic Byway, una delle most beautiful scenic drive in Oklahoma, all’interno della Ouachita National Forest, che attraversa le Winding Stair Mountains e le Ouachita Mountains. La scenic drive inizia a Talihina lungo Oklahoma State Highway 1, fino a Mena Arkansas. La strada è molto bella, lungo il percorso si accede a diversi viewpoints, da cui è possibile ammirare bellissimi panorami mozzafiato.
Le foto sono d’obbligo, pertanto attiviamo la funzione Autopilot, in dotazione nel sofisticatissco software di Tesla Model S. E qui l’emozione è veramente fortissima: superato il primo momento di ansia, che ti prende nell’affidare completamente la guida alla macchina, ti redi conto che invece il pilota automatico guida anche molto meglio di te!
Grazie al complesso sistema di telecamere in dotazione su Tesla Model S, la macchina guida alla velocità di crociera secondo i limiti di velocità indicati, si mantiene perfettamente al centro della corsia, rallenta in caso di necessità o in vista di un ostacolo, al semaforo rosso si ferma ed spesso occupa automaticamente la corsia libera più a destra. L’attenzione del guidatore tuttavia non può mai abbassarsi, non è consentito distrarsi o perdere di vista la strada, pena la disattivazione automatica della funzione Autopilot (e questo è sicuramente un dispositivo di grande sicurezza!)
Grazie all’Autopilot, percorriamo senza fatica tutte le 54 miglia della scenic road fino a Mena, dove si rende necessaria una nuova ricarica, con la quale arriveremo fino a Ozark, AR, verso la nostra destinazione finale Eureka Spring.
Abbiamo percorso 432 miglia, dopo circa una dozzina di ore di viaggio, arriviamo di sera in questa deliziosa cittadina in Arkansas, deve sembra che il tempo si sia fermato alla fine del 19 secolo.
Dopo tante miglia nella natura, attraversando piccoli villaggi o al massimo un paio di centri più grandi, come Ozark, veniamo colpiti dalle molteplici strutture turistiche che la piccola cittadina offre: motel, piccoli alberghi e bed&breakfast, ristoranti, molti in edifici in stile vittoriano.
Pernottiamo in un delizioso ‘cozy’ bed & breakfast, Heartstone Inn & Cottages, un edificio di fine ottocento perfettamente mantenuto, arricchito da un grazioso giardino all’ingresso e dove abbiamo prenotato una mini suite arredata in perfetto stile dell’epoca, curatissima e molto confortevole, con un piccolo gazebo nel porch antistante la camera.
Dopo una buonissima colazione a base di french toast, hashbrowns, salsicce and frutta fresca servita alle 09 in punto (!), usciamo per la visita alla cittadina, che date le dimensioni, si visita in una mattinata. I tours turistici sono due e si possono effettuare con i due trolley, che effettuano rispettivamente il tour storico, che si svolge lungo in centro storico, ricco di edifici autenticamente di fine ottocento, primo novecento, perfettamente mantenuti, negozietti di souvenirs a disposizione dei molti turisti, che affollano la piccola cittadina; e il secondo tour, porta invece alla grande e imponente statua del Cristo di Ozark, situata poco fuori città.
Terminata la visita ed effettuata la ricarica, ripartiamo per il prossimo stop, War Eagle Mill, Rogers AR, nella War Eagle Valley, un antico, storico mulino situato negli Ozarks. La strada di accesso è sterrata per circa un miglio, ma nessun problema per la nostra Model S. Basta aumentare l’altezza delle sospensioni, accedendo ovviamente ai comandi nel computer di bordo ed il gioco è fatto! (Il computer è completissimo di funzioni operative, dalla regolazione della temperatura e della ventilazione nell’abitacolo, ovviamente regolabile a piacere, al comando per luci, lavavetri, ecc ecc. Non parliamo poi del sistema “media entertainment” con tutte le app di streaming tv, radio ecc, disponibili per l’intrattenimento, WOW!!)
Accanto all’edificio con il mulino, il ristorante e lo store di prodotti tipici del posto, si trova lo storico ponte sul fiume, attraversabile in auto.
Il tour volge al termine e facciamo ritorno a OKC, in meno di quattro ore, lasciando ancora la guida all’autopilot, che svolge egregiamente la sua guida come un perfetto robot umanoide!
Importante: il costo per l’alimentazione elettrica di 706 miglia? Sorpresa, 30$!
